Lionel Brockman Richie was born on June 20, 1949 in Tuskegee, Alabama. He grew up in the Tuskegee Institute campus where his parents and grandparents had been working. During his study at the local college, Lionel joined The Commodores, a band that gained a momentum in the late seventies. As a member of this formation, he played saxophone, performed backing vocals and co-wrote some songs. Although, The Commodores had developed friendly relations inside the group, Richie had to quit. This happened after he succeeded significantly as a producer and author of several big hits by the outside performers, which made him the most interesting person for the press compared to the rest of The Commodores.Since that moment, Lionel has been working as a sole artist.
He decided to stay with the Motown label, a long time partner of The Commodores. He released his first album, Lionel Richie, in 1982 to make a huge step forward.
The record ranked third in the pop charts and sold a million copies. It had three songs, including one of the artist’s most famous tracks Truly, in Top 5. The follow-up Can't Slow Down made him an even bigger star. It featured as many as five tracks to enter Top 10. Two of them, All Night Long (All Night), and Hello, became number one hits. Eventually, this studio work was distributed to an amount of nine million CDs and received Grammy’84 as Best Album of the Year. Richie’s reputation earned him an invitation to perform at the closing ceremony of the Olympic Games in Los Angeles in 1984.In 1985, Lionel Richie joined Michael Jackson to participate in the grand charity project USA for Africa.
Their single We Are the World raised millions of dollars to battle famine in the African countries. In a short while, Richie came back to the tops of the charts with the ballad Say You, Say Me, recorded for White Nights, yet not featured on the official soundtrack. 1986 saw the artist release one more studio work, Dancing on the Ceiling. Although it did not match the results of the previous albums, the new record also had considerable sales. However, Lionel’s uncontrolled deviation towards slow tempo songs hindered his growth as a musician. In 1987, he unexpectedly decided to take a break.
First, he was exhausted after the decade of laborious and high-quality studio activity. Secondly, the moment of glory was the best time to quit. Richie broke the silence only in 1992 as he came up with the compilation Back to Front including both his own hits and some songs of the Commodores.By the time of his next album issuance in 1996, Richie had gone through his father’s death and his marriage collapse. His new studio effort, Louder Than Words, was an attempt to adjust his style to the contemporary music tendencies. With a lot of borrowings from R&B, this long player hit Top 30 and became golden, yet having not a single big hit. The singer’s subsequent album, Time (1998), followed the stylistics of his early works, but was a charts outsider and turned into a commercial flop.
Lionel delivered one more album, Renaissance, in 2000 to find good reviews in Europe. In 2004, having endured the divorce with his second wife, Richie released Just for You. The process of making Coming Home (2006) involved a number of celebrated performers from different genres of music. This album appeared Richie’s most successful release in the last ten years.
The new record Just Go was released in 2009.

Lionel Brockman Richie, Jr. (born June 20, 1949) is an American singer-songwriter, musician, record producer and actor. From 1968, he was a member of the musical group Commodores signed to Motown Records. Richie made his solo debut in 1982 with the album Lionel Richie and number-one hit 'Truly'.
Early life: Richie was born in Tuskegee, Alabama, the son of Alberta R. (Foster) and Lionel Brockman Richie. Richie grew up on the campus of Tuskegee Institute. His grandfather's house was across the street from the home of the president of the college.
His family moved to Joliet, Illinois, where he graduated from Joliet Township High School, East Campus. A star tennis player in Joliet, he accepted a tennis scholarship to attend Tuskegee Institute, and graduated with a major in economics.
After receiving his undergraduate degree from Tuskegee, Richie briefly attended graduate school at Auburn University. He is a member of Kappa Kappa Psi and Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity.
Career: As a student in Tuskegee, Richie formed a succession of R&B groups in the mid-1960s. In 1968 he became a singer and saxophonist with the Commodores.
They signed a recording contract with Atlantic Records in 1968 for one record before moving on to Motown Records initially as a support act to The Jackson 5. The Commodores then became established as a popular soul group. Their first several albums had a danceable, funky sound, as in such tracks as 'Machine Gun' and 'Brick House.' Over time, Richie wrote and sang more romantic, easy-listening ballads such as 'Easy,' 'Three Times a Lady,' 'Still,' and the tragic breakup ballad 'Sail On.' By the late 1970s he had begun to accept songwriting commissions from other artists. He composed 'Lady' for Kenny Rogers, which hit #1 in 1980, and produced Rogers's album Share Your Love the following year.
Richie and Rogers maintained a strong friendship in later years. Latin jazz composer and salsa romantica pioneer La Palabra enjoyed international success with his cover of 'Lady,' which was played at Latin dance clubs. Also in 1981 Richie sang the theme song for the film Endless Love, a duet with Diana Ross. Issued as a single, the song topped the UK and US pop music charts, and became one of Motown's biggest hits. Its success encouraged Richie to branch out into a full-fledged solo career in 1982. He was replaced as lead singer for The Commodores by Skyler Jett in 1983.
His debut album, Lionel Richie, produced another chart-topping single, 'Truly,' which continued the style of his ballads with the Commodores. (Collected from ).
LionelRichie's new duets album,Tuskegee, finds him recording new versions of his biggest hits with some of country music's biggest stars includingKenny Chesney, Tim McGraw, Sugarland'sJennifer NettlesandBlake Shelton. Lionel has worked with country legendsAlabamaandKenny Rogersin the past, and he was curious to work in country music again. That's when Lionel decided to reach out to see which country artists would want to record with him for theTuskegeeproject.' The answer was everybody called,' Lionel says. 'And because of their schedule, I was actually quite blown away 'cause I didn't expect the response that I got.'
Once Lionel got into the studio with his country collaborator, he handed the reins over to them on the new version of the song would sound like. The country stars picked their own song from Lionel's catalog, and Lionel was pleasantly surprised to find that they all knew his songs by heart.'
It was personal to them to do the song that they were doing,' Lionel explains. 'So, I let them arrange the song as if they were going to put it on their album. So, I want aTim McGrawversion of, and I want aRascal Flattsversion of, and they gave it to me in spades.' The title ofTuskegeeis a nod to Lionel's hometown of Tuskegee, Alabama. Since he was raised in the deep south, Lionel feels the songs he writes already have a country quality to them.He says, 'I wrote those songs in Tuskegee, Alabama inspired by the people who live in Tuskegee.

So, it's a fitting tribute to come home and present it that way.' -ForShania Twain, recording a new version of 'Endless Love' with Lionel marked the first time she'd sung in a studio in seven years. At first, the task of singing with Lionel seemed too daunting to consider.' Oh, that was a definite no. No way,' Shania tells ABC News Radio. There's no way I can do that.
I'm way too insecure vocally to sing in front of another celebrity. That's never gonna happen.' After some coaxing from Lionel, Shania got the job done.
She says, 'I do manage to get with Lionel and sing with him scared out of my wits, I can tell you right up to the very end.' -Jay DeMarcusofRascal Flattswas very honored to sing 'Dancing on the Ceiling' in the studio with Lionel. Jay was also floored at how good Lionel still looks, saying, 'Well, he doesn't age. He looks the same as he did in 1983.' Lionel also provided plenty of laughs in the studio. Jay says, 'He's such a great guy.
He really is, and he's hysterical. I mean, he's really, really, really funny.' -Jason Aldeangrew up listening to Lionel's music as a boy in Macon, GA.
